Furnaces & Heaters

Propane Gas line for RV furnace

Frosty the snow man was a jolly happy soul! Oh, wait, sorry about that. Just know you are fortunate you didn’t hear me in real life!

Tis the season of temperatures dropping and what a wonderful world we live in that we do not have to freeze when this happens. Time to forget about your AC unit and turn up the heat. Furnaces can be a life saving device and needs to work when we need it. Most RVs are not built with the best insulation for winter so having a working furnace is essential. We will talk a little about air conditioners that have a heat pump but for now the focus will be on when we get to temps 65 and below.

If it is not an option to pack up shop and head to warmer climates then a furnace will be one of the only options for you. Mainly because no one like wearing their snow pants and winter boots to stay insulated during the winter. Furnace systems are typically propane unless you are using an Aqua Hot System. In your furnace, propane will be burned in a tube heating up the air and then a fan will blow that air directly into your coach or through a duct system in your rig. Depending on the installation, age, and wear of your rig the efficiency could be impacted. Give your RV guys a call to make sure all duct work and furnace is operating at the best efficiency. We have seen the duct work pinched during installation or even tore off by rough roads. If you are noticing limited air flow from your furnace vents or your space not heating in 20-30 minutes (depending on how cold you are starting), there may be something to check out on the system.

Improving efficiency in your furnace

The Aqua Hot System is a bit different than a regular furnace as it uses either electrical, generator, and/or diesel to heat water. Once the water is heated, a blower fan is used to distribute that hot air to the different areas through direct or duct work. This is typically a special order or aftermarket item unless specifically requested or is standard in certain coaches. This video below does a great job explaining more about how it uses these different systems. The example is in a coach but any rig with an Aqua Hot installed will work in a similar way.
